Baby Quilt

This is my May FMQ challenge.  I joined 6″ squares together to make a baby quilt.  A woman at my church is having a baby, and I thought it would be a nice gift for her.  At first I was a bit nervous, since it is basically giving my “homework” as a gift, but I was pleased with how it turned out.  When I finished the quilting on it, my husband’s comment was “That looks a lot better.  It was pretty boring without those squiggly lines.”  I used fabrics from my stash, so I didn’t have to purchase anything for it.  I even used all the leftover pieces from the blocks to make the binding.

My philosophy for baby gifts is that they are going to be used.  I want to make something beautiful, but keep in mind that the baby will probably throw up on it.  This quilt probably took 4 -5 hours from start to finish, and it was great practice for free-motion quilting.  I love the pattern of going back and forth over the large stippling.  It was fun to do and a great way to fill in shapes.  I did really large stippling on the quilt top, but it would also be nice to do smaller stippling and tiny crossing loops for a background fill.

Of course, at the shower, G2 had to help with the presents.  I wish all the best to mom and baby.
