Introducing the Kids’ Summer Quilt Project

School is done for the summer, and the time has come for all the fun activities that the kids didn’t have time for during the school year.  They probably wouldn’t mind watching tv for the entire summer, but that’s not happening at my house.  After some discussion about what to do, B1 and B2 decided they would like to make quilts.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to document the process and if other kids (or adults) want to follow along, all the steps would be laid out.

We are going to make rag quilts, since they are easy and pretty forgiving.  If you don’t know what a rag quilt is, just trust me and go with it (or ask Mr. Google).  We will each be making a slightly different version of the same thing, so there will be three variations.  Here are the participants:

This is B1.  He is nine years old, and his favourite activities are baseball and science.  He wants to know about everything, and when he is grown up, watch for him on Jeopardy.  He is making his quilt out of flannel.  He is using some from my stash, and when he saw the colours available, he decided he will give the quilt as a gift.  We’ll see how it turns out.

This is B2.  He is seven years old, and his favourite activities are running and playing video games.  He has been asking for months to make a quilt, so he is pretty excited about this.  He is making his quilt out of old flannel work shirts that we got at the thrift store.  He wasn’t too excited about the idea of using shirts until he saw them, then he was thrilled with the “farmer shirts”.

I am mom.  I am old, and if you read this blog, you already know about my favourite activities.  I will be making a quilt with old jeans.  I am looking forward to this summer project.
