July FMQ Challenge

Lately I have done a bit of sewing, but not much blogging.  I almost forgot to post this month’s free-motion quilting challenge, which would have been a shame since I got it done last week.  This month’s expert was Angela Walters.  I enjoyed this technique which is called “tiles”  I began with stippling the tiles, but then my creativity (or ADD) kicked in, and I tried a few more filler stitches.  I need to practice more basic filler stitches, since at the machine I drew a bit of a blank and had to go on-line for ideas.  I don’t know how people  learned anything before the internet.

I have given up on having my practice pieces be anything useful.  I am using a high contrast thread so that I can see my stitches easily and evaluate them honestly.  When my kids go back to school, I will have more time to practice on actual projects and refine my technique.

Kathy Wylie (an award-winning quilter who recently spoke to my guild) has a series on her blog about free-motion quilting, and I am hoping to try her exercises as well.

  1. I like the flowers. I just had my first experience with free motion quilting and it was an exercise in extreme patience. I’ll have to practice some pretty designs for my next project.

  2. You did a great job! I love the variety of fillers. I think my favorites are the wavy back and forth lines and the swirls right under it on the bottom, there.

Sigh. I’m so behind. I haven’t done May, June OR July. Maybe I’ll have a few minutes today . . . Thanks for the inspiration to get back on that. I really do need more practice.
